Michael Schmeisser, winner of the Care-for-Rare Science Award 2015

Dr. Dr. Michael Schmeißer from the University of Ulm received the Science Award for a project targeting the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, a development disorder which leads to intellectual disabilities, autistic behavior, and often epilepsy. Through his research, he aims at a better understanding of brain development and associated developmental disorders. The main cause of this rare disease is the genetic loss of a copy of the SHANK3 gene whose gene product stabilizes the contact points between human nerve cells. Schmeisser’s long-term goal is to develop more effective treatment approaches for a disease that has so far been considered incurable.
